Hypospadias and Circumcision
Hypospadias means the urinary opening is located below its usual position at the tip of the penis. When and how circumcision is performed is determined together with anatomical assessment and surgical correction planning.
What is hypospadias?
In hypospadias, also colloquially called “born circumcised” in Turkish, the urinary opening is positioned differently. Its location and surrounding tissues are important in determining the surgical approach.
Some children may also have penile curvature, an undescended testicle or kidney differences. These are considered together during assessment.
What is assessed on examination?
The urinary opening, penile structure and any curvature are examined. Surgical correction is planned according to the child's anatomy.
The timing and technique are explained to the family after assessment. The same surgical plan does not apply to all children.
How is it related to circumcision?
There is no single unconditional rule for circumcision with hypospadias. Some surgical approaches defer circumcision, while in suitable cases it may be performed alongside correction.
In suitable cases, if the surgical plan allows, circumcision can be performed with correction. Whether this is appropriate is determined by examination and surgical planning.
Circumcision is therefore not considered independently of hypospadias assessment; the relationship between the procedures is clarified with the family.
